❕EPISODE 5: The Truth About Aluminum❕
Hi BGS Village! Welcome back to the “One Small Thing” segment, where we chat about science & sustainability. Just one small change can make a big difference!
🌍💚 🔬 What is Aluminum (Al)? Aluminum (Al) is the most abundant metal in Earth’s crust and is widely used in cookware, foil, and disposable baking trays. It’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and inexpensive—but is it safe for cooking?
⚠️ The Science Says… Be Cautious! Studies show that aluminum can leach into food, especially when exposed to heat, acidic ingredients (like tomatoes & citrus), and prolonged storage. Chronic exposure has been linked to:
🚨 Neurotoxicity & Brain Health – Research suggests high aluminum intake may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
🧠 🚨 Hormone Disruption & Cellular Damage – Aluminum has been associated with oxidative stress, which can damage cells over time.
🚨 Bioaccumulation Concerns – While our bodies can excrete some aluminum, excessive exposure from cookware, processed foods, and even antiperspirants can lead to accumulation.
💡✨ BGS-Approved Swaps🔬👩🏾🔬
✅ Swap Aluminum Foil for Unbleached, Silicone-Free Parchment Paper ♻️
✅ Use Glass, Cast Iron, or Stainless Steel Cookware 🥘
✅ Avoid Storing Acidic Foods in Aluminum Containers 🍋
✅ Need help making sustainable swaps? BGS offers environmental sustainability consultations—DM us to get started!

❕EPISODE 4: What’s with artificial food dyes?❕
Hi BGS Village! Welcome back to the “One Small Thing” segment, where we chat about science & sustainability. Just one small change can make a big difference! 🌍💚 🩷Artificial Food Dyes: It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re all about prevention here at @theblackgirlscientist! Did you know one thing most of us can control is what we put in our mouths every day? One hidden culprit: artificial food dyes.
🚫🌈 🩷Two of the most common ones, 🟡Yellow 5 (Tartrazine) and 🟠Yellow 6 (Disodium 6-hydroxy-5-(4-sulfonatophenyl azo)-2-naphthalene-sulfonate) are found in everything from candy to cereal. These dyes have been linked to hyperactivity in children, allergic reactions, and even cancer risks.
🩷In fact, studies have shown that these dyes can lead to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body—both of which can contribute to cancer development. Our girl @thefoodbabe also brings these food injustices to light, especially in popular fast food meals like Panda Express!
🍜 🩷Here at @theblackgirlscientist, we believe Knowledge is POWER, and small changes matter. One small thing to live more sustainably is to swap out processed, brightly colored foods with whole, natural alternatives. That’s why today, I’m showing you how to prepare a dye-free Panda Express copycat meal using clean, organic ingredients!
🍲🌱 🩷One Small Thing To-Do🩷 1️⃣ Opt for foods that use natural coloring (like turmeric or beet powder) 2️⃣ Make homemade versions of your favorite takeout meals to avoid artificial additives 3️⃣ Support brands that are transparent about using dye-free & non-toxic ingredients 😋 thanks for the the recipe: @DinnerthenDessert

Hi BGS Village! 👋🏽 Welcome to a special ♻️BGS One Small Thing x BGS Fitness💪🏽 mash-up! Today, we’re combining science, sustainability, and fitness for a triple-impact episode! 🌍💚💪🏽Just one small change can make a big difference in your lifestyle.
🔬What is Silicone? Silicone is a man-made polymer, created from silicon (an element found in sand) and oxygen. It’s durable and flexible, making it a popular choice in both the kitchen and fitness gear!
♻️Recycling Silicone While silicone isn’t biodegradable and recycling options are limited, its durability means it can last for years with proper care. The key is mindful disposal when it’s no longer needed.
♻️Silicone in the Kitchen: Pros & Cons
✨ Pros - Versatile for food prep 🍳 - Non-stick & flexible 🌿 - Eco-friendly alternative to plastic ♻️
⚠️ Cons - At temperatures above 200°F, siloxanes (toxic compounds) can be released into food & air, so it’s important to use silicone with caution under heat.

❕EPISODE 2: What’s with Polyester?❕
Hi BGS Village! Welcome to the “One Small Thing” segment 😊 where we chat about science & sustainability! Just one small change can make a big difference! 🌍💚
We’re off to Long Beach, CA for a conference, so let’s talk about…POLYESTER! 👗
🔍 Go grab a piece of clothing from your closet and check the tag. What’s it made of? 🧐
Polyester is a synthetic, petroleum-based plastic often found in our clothes. It’s typically produced with toxic chemicals but feels like cloth. 🌿🛢️
💚 Why care? Polyester production impacts climate change more than aviation and shipping combined. Health-wise, it can be carcinogenic and disrupt hormones. We’re wearing plastic! 😱
👩🏾🔬At BGS, we offer knowledge & solutions:
1. Check your tags!
2. Buy organic cotton or natural fibers (linen, wool, silk etc.) when possible.
3. Support sustainable brands.
Now, let’s talk conference fits! We’re transitioning to natural fibers and love @everlane Check their sale section for up to 70% off! 🛍️✨
Let us know your favorite look! 🌿👗💚Did you know this about polyester?? 👀
Featuring the:
🤍 The Linen A-Line Midi Dress
🖤 The Organic Cotton Waisted Dress
💚 The Gathered Neck Top + The Linen Easy Pant
💙 The Viscose Mock Neck Top + The Pleated Wide-Leg Chino (our fav✨😍)

One Small Thing Segment Episode 1 What’s with PFAS!?
♻️ONE SMALL THING SEGMENT♻️
❕EPISODE 1: What’s with PFAS?❕
👩🏾🔬 Have you ever heard of this term?? If not listen in 💚 if you have still listen in ☺️
👩🏾🔬 PFAS are a family of thousands (~4700) of chemicals used to make water-, grease-, & stain-repellent coatings for a vast array of consumer goods and industrial applications—first introduced into the environment in 1946 when DuPont introduced “Teflon” (PFOA) coating to the world. 🌎
You know here at @theblackgirlscientist we believe Knowledge is POWER & that it only takes one small thing to live more sustainably 💚 we are so excited to kick off these segments especially given our upcoming BGS DETOX 2024 initiative
🤍 Simple ACTION-One Small Thing to-do:
Swap ONE current non-stick cookware with a cast iron or stainless steel piece
If you eat out, immediately remove food from the wrapper/packaging to limit PFAS exposure
Switch to a non-stick airfryer (ex. BigBoss glass air fryer) Are there any questions you want answered?! What other topics do you have questions on?
